WHY FILM IN THE NORTH EAST?

Tom Harvey
Chief Executive
The North East of England has both the technical talent and the world class locations to make your production a success and Northern Film & Media is dedicated to making it easier for you to choose the region, its crew and its facilities, for your next shoot.

We work to introduce the talent to the market and bring the market back to the talent. This means us introducing you to what the region has to offer and you feeling engaged and excited enough to base your next production here.

The North East has delivered critically and commercially successful productions time and again. Atonement, Wire in the Blood, Place of Execution and The Revenge Files of Alistair Fury are just some of the popular productions that have already shot here. They choose to shoot here because of the services we provide, the skills that exist in the region, the range of locations available to them and the will of the region to make production happen here.

We now have 16 of the region’s 18 local authorities signed up to our Filming Friendly Charter, a partnership agreement between local authorities and Northern Film & Media which ensures a proactive attitude towards making production happen in the region. Our Familiarisation Fund has paid for a number of visits to the region by location managers, convincing them that this is the North East is the right place to shoot. The three northern screen agencies have pooled their energies and resources to produce Northern Exposure, an easy to use on-line crew and facilities database that provides you with direct access to the talent; and Northern Film & Media’s own location database has just received an overhaul that makes more images than ever before available to you on-line. Don’t forget, our free location service is also on hand to help with any enquiries that you may have.

The North East has a real ‘can do’ attitude towards filming. For Bollywood film ‘Kuan Bola’, filmmakers wanted to close for a whole day one of Newcastle’s busiest and most architecturally stunning streets to film a key scene in which a car is flipped over and sent tumbling down the street. The response of the local authority, nearby businesses and the general public was ‘how can we help you achieve this?’

No fewer than three Bollywood films successfully shot in the North East in the last six months of 2008. Their positive experience is indicative of shooting in the region. Northern Film & Media’s familiarisation fund paid for much of their hunt for locations; our Filming Friendly Partnership ensured a proactive relationship between local authorities and businesses that allowed the filmmakers to do what they needed to do in a quick, efficient, cost effective manner; they used locations from coastal priories to vibrant city centres, dramatic open countryside to modern office spaces during their shoot; and they enjoyed publicity and good will without any intrusion into their schedule.

Northern Film & Media believes in the technical talent of our region, the diversity of our locations, the can do attitude of our local authorities and businesses. The future of the North East media sector lies in its ability to evolve its working practice and extend its traditional boundaries into areas of new technology and new markets. We want you to work with us to make this happen.
