WHY SHOOT YOUR FILM IN WALES?

Mike Wallwork
Wales Screen Commission
Wales has become more and more popular as a location for film and TV drama over the past few years due to a developing broadcast infrastructure, some very attractive financial incentives and a film friendliness which is second to none.

Wales is situated on the western shores of Great Britain, has three National Parks, five Areas of Outstanding Beauty, and only 3 million people! It has a rich heritage and culture, boasts two languages, over 400 castles and a landscape that offers a wealth of beautiful, mysterious and breathtaking locations.

An impressive array of talent across the board can be found located in Wales from our production and facility companies to our crews and individuals. The recent portfolio of productions based, produced or directed in Wales include: The Edge of Love, starring Keira Knightley, Sienna Miller and Matthew Rhys; Flick, starring Faye Dunaway; Half Light starring Demi Moore; Dr Who, starring David Tennant and Tomb Raider II with Angelina Jolie. The stable of acclaimed Welsh actors who have made a name for themselves in British and Hollywood films include Sir Anthony Hopkins, Catherine Zeta Jones, Rhys Ifans, Ioan Gruffudd and Matthew Rhys.

The Wales Screen Commission is the locations service for Wales offering comprehensive information and support on locations, facilities, crew and local services throughout Wales and has successfully established Wales as the first choice location for many producers. The Commission is a member of the Association of Film Commissioners International, the Guild of Location Managers and The Production Guild of Great Britain and is part of the Welsh Assembly Government's Creative Industries support service (Creative Business Wales). This links in the locations service with financial incentives such as the Creative IP Fund for Wales and various funding packages and support available from the Film Agency for Wales.

The £7 million Wales Creative IP Fund has been created as part of the Welsh Assembly Government's strategy for the creative industries in Wales. Through the fund, they act as a "gap financier", offering finance for your production alongside finance that you have already secured from other funding providers.

The WCIPF provides equity investment, typically between £50,000 and £700,000, for feature films, TV productions, new media and music projects. Applicants must have secured a minimum of 60% of their budget from third parties and be able to demonstrate that a proportion of their spend will be in Wales.

Established in July 2006, the Film Agency for Wales has a remit to ensure that the economic, cultural and educational aspects of film are effectively represented in Wales, the UK and the World. As a strategic agency, it also helps to provide new opportunities for Welsh filmmaking talent to promote a dynamic and vibrant film culture in Wales.

The Film Agency for Wales offers funding packages for projects which promote Development, Education, Exhibition (including Film Festivals) and the Production of film.

The Wales Screen Commission has recently made its databases of crew, facilities, locations and local services available on-line via it's website. This is part of our drive to make Wales even more film friendly, as we view each project that shoots here as a potential advertisement for the great place Wales is to film in.
