WHY FILM IN YORKSHIRE?

Sally Joynson
Chief Executive
Screen Yorkshire is the regional screen agency for Yorkshire and Humber, responsible for inspiring, supporting and promoting the screen media industries in the region. Alongside support for regional companies, Screen Yorkshire works nationally and internationally to attract and support incoming production to the region, offering a full Production Liaison Service, assisting with sourcing locations, finding crew and facilities and negotiating road closures, hotel deals and filming permissions.

Screen Yorkshire’s Production Fund invests in film and television production in the region. Feature film credits include A Passionate Woman, The Damned United, Brideshead Revisited and the BAFTA award winning This Is England. Supporting television drama is a priority with recent investments including; Married, Single, Other, Red Riding, Unforgiven, Wuthering Heights and Lost in Austen. Screen Yorkshire also supports low budget feature slate Warp X, whose credits include All Tomorrow’s Parties and the BIFA award winning Bunny and the Bull.

Yorkshire has an established reputation in the industry as a film friendly region, with many incoming production companies returning to shoot in the region. Screen Yorkshire has established a Film Friendly Partnership, aimed at making Yorkshire and Humber the number one destination for film and television production in the UK, with 20 local authorities and other key organisations in the region signed up since the launch in 2008. The initiative sets out to ensure that filming happens as easily and effectively as possible so that production companies have a positive experience of filming here and return for their next project.

Executive Producer on ‘Married, Single, Other’, Andy Harries (The Damned United, Cold Feet, The Queen, Prime Suspect), says :

"Leeds is a brilliant place to film with great local crew who are committed to really high, professional standards and quality work. The city is also a vibrant and enjoyable place to film in with great contrasts and local colour. We loved filming’ Married, Single, Other’ there and we are all looking forward to returning for the second series".

Michele Buck, Executive Producer on Mammoth Screen’s ‘Wuthering Heights’ for ITV says :

"Together with the wonderful diversity of landscape and locations all within a reasonable travelling distance, Yorkshire became the natural home for filming our new adaptation of Wuthering Heights. Screen Yorkshire's valuable investment and production support along with the fantastic crew and facilities in the region enabled us to deliver a production of which we are extremely proud."

Located in the heart of the UK, Yorkshire is just two hours from London and within easy reach of four major airports. Screen Yorkshire has over 200 facilities companies and 1200 skilled and experienced crew registered on its online database, many of which have worked with major productions. The strong base of crew and facilities houses has in no small part been generated and supported by the legacy of ITV’s Yorkshire studios and highly successful long running drama series such as Emmerdale, Heartbeat, The Royal and A Touch of Frost. The region is also home to over 100 independent production companies, including Rollem Productions - the company behind The Chase and Fat Friends and True North, which has grown to be one of the biggest independent production companies in the UK since it was established in 2002.
